Last week Ochre, a fabulous little shop on Broome Street, celebrated some new additions to its Canvas line.
The store has been around for 2-3 years, but I have to say I identified with everything in it. It's a perfect example of an emerging trend we're seeing at New York Spaces that mixes smooth with rough and decorated with worn out. It feels rustic, yet futuristic, which makes for a really pleasant balance and harmony within the space.
You'll find two finished chairs next to two unfinished ones, and no pattern really but lots of solids with lots of texture. Colors are muted for the most part but pieces use other elements to pop and excite.
Husband and wife tag-team Andrew Corrie and Harriet Maxwell Macdonald are the masterminds behind it: she is the store designer and he is the product designer (Canvas).
Check them out at 462 Broome Street, and pay particular attention to the newer pieces introduced last Wednesday. Those included new turned wooden lamps, made from scraps of American black walnut glued together; seating created out of paper mache; two new dinner services, handmade in the U.S.
